Leadership - A new style of supervision?

All around you find discussions and articles about Leadership. But what is it? Is it a new style of supervision? In my opinion, it's nothing new. As most things in the world change, so Leadership is changing as well.

Below you find topics related to a cooperative style of supervision, which I found is also the up-to-date style of Leadership.

Good Leadership consists of:

Ability to avoid much control
If you control to much, it will bother your employees. There is no way to gain 100% control. And you know what? You don't even need that much control.

Don't push to much
Pushing to much to get the results you want to have could bother your employees very much. You don't need to, if you follow the next topic.

Be precise
Explain exactly what your expectation is and when you will need the results. Do this as early as possible and not on the last minute. Every work needs its time.

Inform your team
Information is king in todays world. So let your employees knew. Only employees which know what is going on, could decide correctly what they have to do.

Use the knowledge of your employees
Employees are an asset of your business, if you treat them right. They aren't a cost element alone.

Identify yourself with the Leadership
Accept the responsibilities deriving from that position. Be open to take critics about your behavior and decisions. Otherwise you won't motivate your team to achieve any goal.

Concentrate on the goals
There is no way to blame some else, instead you. You are responsible, you are the Leader. This goes hand in hand with topic before.

Jump into work, if needed
Not interested in getting your hands dirty, than you should search for a 9-to-5-Job. Leadership will urge you to assist your team and employees, when it is needed most.

It's all about people
The humans are the center of everything. Be open for there concerns, spontaneity and assistance. Appreciate there support.

Reorganize Workflow
Workflow processes should be optimized on a ongoing basis. Organize the Optimization and take over responsibility that the workflow is running smoothly. If anything interrupts, assist in solving any problems. Establish job and workflow descriptions and assign them to team members.

Transfer knowledge and provide feedback
Give your experience to the team as well as feedback on actual topics on a regular basis. Nothing is more motivating to your team, as when you let them participate from your knowledge.

Communication
All team members or employees have to use the same vocabulary. This makes communication easier, avoids misunderstandings and saves time as well.

Delegate responsibility
The responsibility for jobs and workflows have to be assigned to the involved employees. They have the detailed knowledge and should have the power of decision up to a certain level.

Discuss problems to find solutions
It might be a good idea to discuss problems with your employees to find the best solution. However, remember companies are not a democracy. They always have a person in charge, with the ultimate power of decision. If discussions are not leading anywhere, it's on you to make a decision. If you are in a hurry to solve something, a discussion will be a waste of time.

Explain your decisions
It will be easier for you, to have your employees do something for you, when they know why they should do it. Provide assistance, if your employee doesn't have an idea how to accomplish the task you request.

Be a good example
What ever you like your employees to do, you should be the first to do it. Always show your commitment to your employees.

Hierarchy
A business won't work without it. It's the same as above, business don't have a democracy, there must be someone who leads the pack. Keep hierarchy as flat as possible. Keep every supervisor informed and push them to inform there team as well. Your employees have to know and understand the hierarchy in place.

Conclusion:
Most importantly the style of supervision, leading (or leadership) and control is based on your mindset. If you see your team or employees as an asset, you will have a more positive attitude. Every money you spend on your employees should be seen as an investment. It will pay off one day. If you appreciate there assistance and work, they will usually do more for your business as if they get under pressure for everything they do.

However, as a Leader, you must have a certain amount of trust into your team or employees. If you take the above topics into practise, you will benefit a lot more than you might think. My experience has always been positive, even when I joined companies with a difficult situation and working climate. Furthermore, the above even helps, when you have team leaders, which have a dictatorial leadership style.

Try it, you'll like it.
