Employees (Qualification, Competence, Responsibility, Participation, etc)

Do you actually know the qualifications of your employees? Do you know how long your employees work daily? Have you visited your employees at there workplace shortly? If you have answered all three questions with "No", it's not a good sign. Well, the more employees you have, the less you can know the qualifications of all, but at least you should know the names of your employees.

Why should you visit your employees at their workplace? Quite simply, at his workplace your employee is usually the more competent of you both, because he/she is doing the job and should know all about it. And if you talk to your employees at their workplace, you get to know more about their problems and on the other hand they will more respect you for this gesture.

In addition, you can find out who stays too long at the workplace. The working hours should not exceed 10 hours daily, because if your employee stays this long or longer, it shows that the employee is not able to do his/her work on demand and/or your business has a bad organization/workflow.

Do not avoid to speak about personal problems, if your employees like to speak about them. A conversation often helps, without to be obliged to something. And if you speak with your employees, ask on what they work at the moment.

Sometimes it could turn out, that the work is no more required, but the employee was not informed (this happens especially with the gathering of data, first the data have to be raised urgently, and then they are not needed anymore, but still the employee works on it).

Did your employees have the full responsibility in their working area? As more responsibility you give to your employees, it might happen that they act more as entrepreneurs as before. To have responsibility motivates employees very often.

And now comes the most difficult thing for many business owners and managers, your employees should be allowed to say always what they think about what is running the wrong way in your company. This should stimulate reflection and discussions.

Use the potential which is in such discussions, maybe you improve your business organization or your products. Criticism of the employees should be regulated within the business, and not outside, otherwise it could leave a bad impression with your customers and suppliers.

To participate employees on the business earnings is still to much for many business owners today. However, only if your employees are participating on the earnings they can even be more an entrepreneur. The money plays a less role, much more importantly is the self-development of your employees.

Employee participation systems vary widthly. Thus there are easy profit-sharings on basis of the Operational Earnings, up to stock option plans and others. Before you participate your employees on the profits of your business, you should check the details with your tax adviser and lawyer.
